The podcast dwells on the fact that the social life of university students is characterized by the existence of a specific culture of sex. Students go to parties, and they constantly engage in casual sexual relations. Sex without commitment and further continuation of communication is becoming the norm.
Two facts turned out to be new to me; the first is related to the sexual activity of the previous generation. I thought that earlier, the same thing happened at parties as now, and the frequency of sexual relations was comparable to the current one. In addition, I heard an idea that I had not thought about before: the aspect of the lack of emotional connection. This podcast phenomenon is given a logical explanation related to the distinction between a romantic relationship and a hookup.
While listening, the concept of a culture of consent comes to mind – an ethical code headed by a person’s boundaries. In sex, this means that any interaction is consensual and voluntary. However, even though the hookup culture is not a rape culture, I think that agreement has not been reached. Girls are forced to have sexual relations in order not to be outsiders in their social group.
Discrimination related to race may be based on the fact that members of other races are more likely to be more religious. Because of this, they do not drink alcohol and do not have sexual relations before marriage, which may affect their popularity. The inequality of people who have a non-heterosexual orientation is associated with an increased risk of encountering homophobia.
From the podcast, I managed to find out that the motives for entering into a sexual relationship change. In the hookup culture, the emotional component is excluded, and sex does not take place to express love and feel intimacy with a partner. An instrumental approach to sex prevails in an intimate relationship to strengthen one’s authority and get pleasure for the sake of entertainment.
