Listen deeper to six selections, each highlighting key aspects of music in the Baroque era. Listen closely to the track at least twice. Make notes of anything that stands out or is of interest to you while you listen. Ravel: how is the imagery of pastel colors and daybreak created in this music? Consider Ravel’s use of orchestration and key centers. Stravinsky: describe the aspects of this music that can be considered “primitivism.” Reich: describe the opening motif and how it is used throughout this composition. Williams: how is this composition similar to an overture? Does it fit the same purpose? How is this composition similar to the works of Wagner? Kondo: video game music is one of the fastest growing segments of new media. Do you think that video games music is a valid classical genre? Why or why not? Ellington: describe the structure of this piece. How is swing rhythm different than classical rhythm? Bernstein: play close attention to the video of this piece in the playlist. How does the music support what you’re seeing? How does what you’re seeing support the music?

Images of pastel tones and dawn are created by Maurice Ravel in the bass register (low winds and strings). Then, with the help of a piccolo flute and a piccolo clarinet, Ravel saturates a deserted place with people (shepherds). Stravinsky does something clever and unusual in the Rite of Spring – he writes each part, for each instrument, as if it were a solo.

It is one of the features of primitivism, music understandable to one Stravinsky and incomprehensible to everyone else. Steve Reich’s motif is minimalistic and monotonous, which creates a sense of calm; it is beautiful. The gradual addition of a new instrument increases the rhythm of the sound and does not leave it as minimalistic.

John Williams has created a piece that can equate with an overture because the same solemn motif is the perfect rhythm for the introduction. The motif traced in Richard Wagner’s Descent to Nibelheim is similar in idea. Indeed, in modern video games, creators are increasingly resorting to the use of classical music. It is normal because only classical music can best convey the atmosphere inside the game, giving drama or celebration (for example, as in The Legend of Zelda).

It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing) is a personal piece that is the standard of jazz music (calm impulsiveness with a minimum number of words). Swing rhythm is an exclusive jazz phenomenon; it has more philosophy, which can be understood intuitively or with special training. The music and the image support each other, allowing you to feel the atmosphere better. Here I would like to say that this is the real America through the pictures of people, scenery, and music (Bernstein, America from West Side Story).
