Lifehistory models divide individuals into two groups: K-selected individuals and R-selected individuals. What are the key differences between the two groups? What are the characteristics of the environmental conditions for each group?

Life history models are divided into K-selected individuals and R-selected individuals. R-selected individuals according to scientific literature are ‘opportunistic’. They make use of a less crowded ecological niche, giving forth to many offspring that have a very low chance of surviving to the adult stage due to limited postnatal care. The K-selected individuals are referred to as the ‘equilibrium’. They compete in a crowded ecological niche and have few offspring that have a high prospect of surviving to adulthood.

R-selected individuals procreate rapidly in an unstable environment. The environment has unpredictable interruptions like weather changes, diseases, predators, and drought, which cause adult mortalities of the organism and the population never reaches the carrying capacity. K-selected groups thrive in a constant environment. It’s protected against disaster, resources are limited, high competition and the group reaches the carrying capacity, here species attain intra-specific competition.
