It is challenging to set long-term goals for someone as young as Joe. In this case, I would suggest that he seek internal and external ideal images. It would be appropriate to ask what the perfect version of him would look like, what he would do, and how his average day would go were he given full freedom to choose. As for external ideals, Joe could give examples of adults that he sees as role models and explain what makes them stand out.
