It takes individual effort and time to develop effective writing skills, especially in a field like history with specific style conventions. Do you think of yourself as a writer? How do you intend to develop your own skills during your time? What suggestions can you provide your peers? How does history writing differ from writing in other academic disciplines?

As well as any other sphere of research or study, history requires accurate reflection of its events and the description of key stages of some processes that would be both precise and not boring to read. In this respect, every historian is a writer who makes sure that what they share with the reader is worth getting acquainted with and analyzing. So far, I cannot consider myself a proficient writer, but I am struggling to become one.

To develop effective writing skills, I resort to different methods. First of all, I frequent the practice of taking brief notes of the lectures to reconstruct the large picture later when revising the material. Secondly, I tend to write at least three drafts before preparing the final presentation of important essays or projects. By doing so, I make sure that the writing flow is suitable for the topic and the prospective audience. Thirdly, I evaluate my own writing by comparing it to my most and least favorite pieces and making conclusions on how I could improve it. I could make similar suggestions to my peers since I believe that every student should constantly work on enhancing one’s writing. I intend to develop my skills further in this direction, and I hope to become able to reflect historical events in a way that my readers would not find uninteresting or not professional.

Writing about history differs from writing in some other academic disciplines because the primary purpose of the former is informing, whereas the latter may be amusing. Although some popular historians do not follow this requirement, I am convinced that representing historical facts necessitates objectivity first of all. Thus, one should be rather cautious not to cross the line between writing about history and creating one’s own interpretations of it.
