God forgave His people’s sins through confession and a sacrificial system in the Old Testament. They used to slaughter an animal and remorsefully ask the Lord for forgiveness, and then they believed to be free. Intentional sins were not covered in the sacrifice as stated in Numbers 15:22-31, and I think this was when they approached the priests, and through them, they offered a specified gift.
