Is self-actualization ever an achievable state of being, or is Maslow suggesting a phenomenon that is psychology’s version of the “Opium of the people!” referring to a means of controlling human behavior by getting people caught up in false hope? In a strong paragraph, respond to this question.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs suggests that self-actualization is achievable only after accomplishing the peripheral hierarchies. Self-actualization is at the top of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and is preceded by the physiological, love and belonging, safety, and esteem needs. Self-actualization is a sense of self-fulfillment that encompass all other needs. Love and belonging need to cover the psychological needs that cover friendships and bonds. According to Maslow, the opium of the people is created when people in a community develop emotional and physiological bonds towards each other through love and belonging.

The behaviors of a community match since every person needs a sense of belonging hence the opium of the people. People develop higher self-esteem from love and belonging, two key factors for self-actualization. Maslow’s theory is humanistic and advocates for reduced dependency and selfishness during self-actualization. Individuals should not rely on others to be confident and feel comfortable but rather share their love with each other to be self-fulfilled. Therefore, self-actualization is a state of being achievable through achieving the opium of the people among the other needs in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
