The story begins with a woman whose husband appears to be controlling and abusive. He is overprotective of her. He forbids her to do anything, and he abuses her if she dares to break his rules. Sadly, for some women throughout the world, this character and situation may be familiar. The protagonist suffers from depression. Her husband tries to âcureâ her with unorthodox methods.
John, the narratorâs husband, does not empathize with anyone. He belittles the womanâs feelings and concerns dismissing them all. He decided to forbid the narrator to write and work and put bars on her windows. Yellow wallpaper concerned the woman very much. John does not listen to her when the narrator talks about it. There was not much to do for her. The woman rarely spoke to anybody and never to someone outside the family. She fell into insanity as a result.
Her mind deteriorated because she lacked meaning, human contact, and distracting activities. The narrator suffered because of the abusive nature of her husband. She developed schizophrenia, which was a defensive mechanism of her brain. This is why the person deserves sympathy from the reader. The woman is an example of a long-term abuse result. She fell victim to her husbandâs ambitious desire to cure her. However, he understood his mistake in the end.
