Social class and patients’ cultural background play a central role in the development of health beliefs and behavioral health patterns. I have witnessed the relationship between socioeconomic status and cultural peculiarities and health-related choices. Health promotion is one of the areas where this link is apparent. I know a Colombian family where parents developed quite unhealthy diets for their children as it is believed that being plump is a sign of health. Children eat a lot of fatty foods and consume an excessive amount of carbohydrates. The family’s cultural beliefs are accompanied by their low access to high-quality healthcare, so the mother is not aware of a healthier alternative and the adverse effects the established lifestyle already has on children’s health.
