In your opinion, which “fictions” that humans have created are the most beneficial and which are the most detrimental for human kind?

One may say that one beneficial “fiction” created by people is human rights. They guarantee people the means that are needed to satisfy their basic needs, such as access to medicine, education, food, water, and shelter. This “fiction” provides fairness and equality in society, treating every person with dignity and respect. In a world where human rights do not exist, the government can make exterminate racial or ethnic groups, as well as enslave people. Instead of working on a nine-to-five job, one would be enslaved and work twelve hours a day, seven days a week. In a world with human rights, each person, regardless of his or her origin, gender, and skin color, has the right to live with dignity, equality, freedom, and justice.

Speaking of human rights in the workplace, it is unlawful for an employer to discriminate against a gay worker or monitor employees everywhere.

One detrimental “fiction” is the system of slavery, which existed in the US from the early colonial days until the late eighteenth century. The reasons why slavery is wrong are so evident that one would say that slavery is bad just because it is wrong. The ownership of humans is commonly considered unethical and immoral since it exploits and degrades human beings. First, slaves were snatched from their families and even from their continent; they were often beaten while walking hundreds of miles in chains. Slaves were stripped of their identity, their language was prohibited, and their names were taken. Despite their protests, slaves were forced to convert to other religions, such as Christianity. It is clear that slavery violates human rights by depriving people of their liberty.
