Recasts are implicit corrective feedbacks offered by L2 teachers aimed at improving the learners’ language acquisition. When a student makes ungrammatical statements, and the teacher immediately reacts with a corrected form of the statement, the child may recognize the teacher’s form as the correct one. For example, when I heard an L2 student say ‘I go to school yesterday’, I immediately interjected with the right form as ‘I WENT to school yesterday’ (stressing the word went). This goes a long way in convincing the student that this is the right form. Besides, this may prevent the occurrence of an identical mistake in the future.

Alternatively, I could have used other methods as outlined below:

  • Repeat the student’s sentence in a rising intonation, so he realizes he has made a mistake;
  • Rebuke the student for using ‘go’ instead of ‘went’;
  • Metalanguage, ask him whether he is referring to the present or the future and question him on what ought to be altered in the sentence to change it to past tense, and so on.

As it turns, the third option is the preferred way of correction as it walks the student, step-by-step, from the error to the right answer, unlike the recast method that simply informs the student of the right answer but with no explanation.

However, recasts can still function to improve a learner’s language skills, especially when done repeatedly.
