In a time when indigenous women suffered from discrimination in almost every facet of society, Tanya Tagaq delved into Inuit throat singing in unique ways. Her main objectives were to preserve the tradition and sensitize the communities on the inherent challenges facing indigenous people, such as land encroachment.
Tagaq transcended contemporary music, taking her message beyond the indigenous communities that crafted it to include such issues as rape, decolonization, women’s discrimination, and environmental degradation. Her exit from throat singing was derived from traveling to various places that led her to see the good in people, giving her the peace she sought.
