The indigenous communities of the East Coast, such as the Mohawk, Cayuga, Oneida, and Onondaga from the Powhatan confederacy that is now Virginia through the Mi’kmaki English settlements resisted the colonists from every corner in the 17th century. The more the colonists desired land, the more they waged war against the native Americans.

The colonists took control of land and resources among the communities living around Massachusetts, leading to the displacement of local communities and, eventually, conflict with the Wabanaki confederacy. The communities around the Great Lakes, such as Iroquois, attacked Montreal and captured 17 colonists from the French in 1660. In 1661 the community organized several attacks, especially against the Abenakis, who allied with the French colonists. They fought the early British and French settlers.
