In their book, Failing at Fairness, Myra and David Sadker asked this question of hundreds of students across the country: “Suppose you woke up tomorrow and found you were a member of another gender. How would your life be different?” Ask students how they would answer this question. What do their answers say about privileges that one group in society might have that are often denied to other groups? Now, change the question: “Suppose you woke up tomorrow and found you were a member of another race. How would your life be different?” Does this give students an insight into their own attitudes and beliefs about other races?

Racial and gender identities have a vital significance in the life of individuals, and most of their achievements are tied to their identities. Sadker and Sadker present Judith as the only girl child active in Chris Zajac’s class who taught only boys more actively. In answering the questions, boys would not be happy to find themselves in the other gender, while girls would be delighted to find themselves as boys.

The respective responses showed that society had different perceptions about gender, and girls wanting to be boys proves that the patriarchal society gave more privileges to boys than girls. The responses about race also show that racial discrimination is encrypted in the student’s societal stereotypes.
