In the speech, Ho mentions crimes committed by the French during their occupation of Vietnam. Which crimes, as you read them, were in your opinion most severe and justified Vietnamese independence?

A

Ho mentioned several crimes committed by the French including imprisonment, murder, impoverishment, illegal taxes, conflicts, and exploitation (“Declaration of independence,” 2018). The most severe crimes that warranted Vietnam’s freedom include the enforcement of inhumane laws, denial of liberty, and oppression. The French had implemented several laws that were aimed at keeping the Vietnamese people subject to their oppressive rule. For example, they forced them to use alcohol and drugs, and they set up three regimes that were aimed at wrecking their national unity. They also promoted oppression by taking their rice fields, stealing their raw materials, and dominating trade. These actions left the Vietnamese people poor. The French violated the ideals of humanity and justice by denying the Vietnamese people freedom (Marr, 2013). The denial of liberty was a violation of the human rights to freedom and happiness. This crime contradicted the principles of self-determination and equality that Ho cited in his speech.
