Although the terms “amour de soi-meme” and “amour propre” can be translated as self-love, Rousseau used the term “amour propre” to indicate esteem emerges from other people’s approval. Contrarily, “amour de soi-meme” is a form of self-love that does not entail seeing oneself based on other people’s opinions or consent. Indeed, Rousseau describes “amour de soi-meme” as a more primitive, compatible, appealing, and comprehensive, whereas “amour propre” depends on the ability to compare oneself to others depending on their appearance in society. In sum, the two causes of inequality are different since “amour de soi-meme” denotes personal well-being, whereas “amour propre” refers to the well-being of social status.
