The claim is central to the author’s argument, which seeks to emphasize that the issues of eating disorders and body images have been driven by the rise of media influence and the decline of other traditional influences such as family. Bordo argues that despite the importance of family and ethnic traditions, most people, especially in a modern world, will be influenced by media in one way or another because no one lives in a “bubble.” The best examples she provides are historical. Fiji did not encounter any disorders or body images until exposure to Western media in 1995 which led to the increasing prevalence of eating disorders. Similar effects occurred in Africa and Asia as well with the “Americanization” of local cultures. This suggests a transition of influence from ethnic traditions (mostly centered around family or religion), which for the most part supported all body types, to highly commercialized media that called for often unnatural perfection. This effect can be ascribed to cultivation theory which suggests that intake of visual media begins to shape conceptions of reality. Heuristic processing leads to observable images being mentally translated into attitudes and perceptions, which are then used to make judgments of self and others.
In “The Globalization of Eating Disorders,” Bordo claims, “In today’s world, it is through images – much more than parents, teachers, or clergy – that we are taught to be.” How essential is this premise to the writer’s claim? What kinds of evidence does she use to support the claim?
