After losing the connection to his father due to the Apartheid, Trevor experienced quite a shock. Even though he forced himself to avoid thinking about Robert, he still experienced significant distress. The question of whether Robert still loved him and cared for him kept Trevor awake at night.

Although it is impossible to state with certainty whether Robert did care for Trevor, one could argue that the separation was difficult for the father as well: “He would cook for me. He’d ask me what I wanted, and I’d always request the exact same meal, a German dish called Rösti, which is basically a pancake made out of potatoes and some sort of meat with a gravy.” Although Trevor explains that Robert did have a family after separating from Trevor’s mother, he is clearly concerned with the fate of his son and the woman that he loved, which implies that he did think of Trevor and genuinely missed him.
