In The Bagel Deli, Incorporated, how would you characterize flow process – line flow to flexible flow – in the production of making bagels on a step-by-step basis?

The flow process would be characterized as a steady approach. A regular process is one that has a fixed number of activities taking place in the Bagel baking enterprise. The baking process is a line procedure by which each exercise leads to another action taking place. The process takes place in a series of steps, by which each activity supports the next event, and each stage of the production process sets the pace for the next.

All the inputs are put in from one end, and all of them undergo the production process at the same time, to produce the product, hence no inputs are put through the production process. For this reason, all ingredients necessary for the production have to be input right from the start of the Bagel-making process. However, the flow process is not flexible to accommodate any changes that may take place as technology advances. New ways of doing business may be implemented in the production process to ensure that it is more efficient than the standard method.

Flexibility in the production plant is essential because it enables the producer to introduce new items to the product line. For example, in the Bagel production business, the owner can add new Bagel flavors to the product line. It will increase the number of targeted customers and attract new ones. The changing tastes and preferences of the customers need to be observed and addressed as well.

As they change, the business needs to introduce new products that conform to the current consumer preferences. A rigid production process limits the available room for improvement within the production line. For this reason, significant changes will have to be made or another production line to be built altogether to enable them to introduce new products. The high level of inflexibility may cause the business to lose some of its potential customers.

Flexibility puts the business at a competitive advantage over other players in the industry. It is vital to ensure the continued survival of the enterprise. Competitors may come up with new and different products that will be more attractive to the consumers. The primary goal here is to stay ahead of the competition.
