The government banned and criminalized abortions which led to a growing number of illegal abortions. Women were closely observed by the gynecologists who served to police women’s bodies.

As a consequence, women feared potential motherhood, and those that were compelled to bear children frequently abandoned them, resulting in the establishment of state-run orphanages and institutions. Furthermore, the estate’s living circumstances worsened significantly, and many families’ inability to rear multiple children led to a rise in the number of orphaned children.
