In Hemingway’s short story “Hills Like White Elephants,” the man and the girl are talking about abortion and how difficult or dangerous the procedure is. He does not want a child. They are not married, and he does not want to marry her. He especially does not want to be tied down in one place. At first, the effect is confusing, but then it becomes quite natural for them not to say anything directly because they are avoiding the real discussion about whether or not this is right, dangerous, or if it is wrong to kill the child. They are avoiding the really difficult discussion of morality.
