Leadership is the ability to inspire and motivate a group of people throughout a prolongated period of time.

There are several types of leadership available for a commercial bank, which differ in their levels of compliance with the definition. The three main ones are authoritarian, authentic, and transformational. Authoritarian leadership is extremely performance-oriented and often goes hand in hand with the idea that employees have to be forced to work and showcase high-standard performance. An example of this style would be the implementation of monthly targets for bank deals, with a fine system designed for unsuccessful employees. This system can hypothetically be implemented in a commercial bank but contradicts the definition I outlined in the introduction.

The authentic leadership style emphasizes the leader’s supposed transparency, integrity, and honesty at all stages of the work process. An authentic leader motivates by personal example and embodies the organization’s principles. This type of leadership sufficiently complies with the definition since leadership by example is widely considered to be an effective approach. However, it is hard to picture this style in the commercial bank setting since banking privacy sets hard limits for any transparency attempts.

The transformational leadership style is, in my opinion, the most reflective of the introductory definition and has successfully been implemented in banks and other financial organizations. It involves a leader challenging and motivating the employees to transcend the limitations and routine operations of the firm. A transformational leader helps the members of their team to evolve as professionals. This type of leadership is one of the most appropriate for modern financial institutions. An example of transformational leadership would be a leader challenging the banking process by digitalizing most operations.
