In Dante’s Inferno, Dante’s depiction of Divine Justice shows levels of severity of sins. It also shows how punishments mirror sins. Select one kind of sin as it is represented in The Inferno and talk about the placement of those kinds of sinners in one of the nine levels of Hell. How does Dante rank the particular sin? How does the punishment reenact in a metaphoric way the actual sin?

One of Dante’s terrible sins at the very heart of Hell is fraud. This sin is placed in the eighth circle of Hell because it contains those people who destroy society. Sinners are distributed into ten bolgias, each with its traitors to humanity. The demons who meet the travelers do not understand why they have come so far.

The bridge is destroyed, and there is no other way because the bonds that hold people together are absent here. He described when this happened: “Yesterday, five hours later than this hour, One thousand and two hundred sixty-six.” This chronology indicates the end of society, after which there is no way forward, and that it is specific events that lead to destruction.

Dante assesses fraud as a disintegration of social relations because interpersonal communication is destroyed. All social principles are perverted and lost, irretrievably destroyed. Gradually sins take hold of people: the procurers ruin the destinies of a few people, and then the sowers of discord destroy all of society.

In the last bolgias, the sinners became part of Hell: some tore themselves to pieces while others greedily sold them. Dante sees fraud as the end: “Of every malice that earns hate in Heaven, injustice is the end.” The sinners howl among themselves and try to lure each other, unable to realize that their end has already come.
