In fact, Mill describes individual happiness as the existence of maximum enjoyment without any pain. While describing both types of happiness, Mill found a strong interconnection that collective happiness might be achieved only when there is no pain on the individual’s level. As a result, individuals become happy on the macro level by following egocentric ‘enjoyment and pain-free’ principles.
