Pick one of these topics and discuss how it is a significant element in the novel. Give 2 or 3 examples from the novel to support your ideas.

“Don Quixote” is the story of how one man can change his reality and fill it with amazing things. The truth that Don Quixote sees upsets him; he resents that it is so gray and dull. The problematic nature of the work lies in the contradiction between the chivalrous ideals of Don Quixote and the reality, which is not at all perfect.

Fantasy becomes his constant companion, through which the older man’s life takes on meaning. He imagines that his nag is a noble steed and that Panza, the farmer is a faithful squire: “you will see with your own eyes how honorable a calling it is that we follow.” This realizes Don Quixote’s ideals amid a simple world where he previously could find no place.

Imagination is vital because Don Quixote has goals and nonfiction companions: his beloved Dulcinea of Toros appears unexpectedly. He devotes feats to her, fighting the giants, who are mere windmills. His imagination changes reality, so Sancho thinks “that was happening in a dream, and that everything is the result of magic.”

Don Quixote changes the world around him through imagination and acquires truly chivalrous ideals: courage and bravery. Although he had not previously imagined such a life, he can sacrifice himself. The richness of his imagination leads him to truly chivalrous qualities, so he deserves respect. Cervantes shows that the important thing is to start with oneself, creating an ideal world.
