Julian explains the sixteen different visions she had when she fell ill in “A Book of Showings to the Anchoress Julian of Norwich.” She tries to describe the divine significance of each dream, where she gives various representations of God that help provide a deeper understanding of Christian teachings. The book represents God as a mother when it maintains that the entire revelation intends to explain divine kindness according to Julian’s teachings about ‘God our Mother.’

Julian of Norwich also refers to God as the ‘Holy Ghost.’ She also reveals the trinity aspect and how everything rests on it through the concept of natura creatix. These concepts are vital in understanding God, Jesus, and traditional Christian teachings. Moreover, Julian presents the love of God as eternal, full of goodness and wisdom, and she refers to Jesus Christ as ‘our Brother’ and Savior, “… he would say that the second person should become our mother, our brother and our savior.”

The traditional Christian teachings refer to God as ‘God our Father.’ However, Julian refers to God as ‘God our Mother,’ a nontraditional representation of God. She uses feminine images to explain the sixteen revelations and the traditional male images, which creates an inclusive aspect between the two images.

She refers to God’s love throughout the text, which is the basis of her revelation. Her trust in God is based on her experience of His love, “… by the same … and goodness I shall make 40 well all that is not well, and thou shalt see it.” Therefore, the concept of ‘God our Mother’, as brought out by Julian, helps enhance an understanding of the natura creatix and the traditional Christian teachings of the love of God.
