Imagine you are meeting with a new client who recently experienced a loss and reports having trouble coping. As you consider all the factors that could be impacting the client’s current symptoms, describe 5 questions you might explore during your first appointment. Are there questions you would wait to ask? Why?

The first question is about the mediator of “kinship”: Who died and who that person was to the client? Next, one may ask what happened to understand whether the death was expected or not, and whether any factors contributed to grief. However, if the person is uncomfortable talking about it, I would not push them to answer. The third question deals with the client’s behavior changes after a loss – how have things been? Next, I would ask whether the client is eating, sleeping, and feeling fine to determine whether they have any symptoms that endanger their health. Finally, I would ask about past losses because one’s history can say much about how a person grieves. I would avoid asking about concurrent stresses during the first meeting and keep these questions for later sessions to focus on one problem at a time.
