If COVID-19 had never happened, there could still be barriers to Gusto 54’s continued growth. In particular, high operating costs and poor earnings growth would be a significant challenge for the company. As per Birbrager and Konrad, “60 per cent of new restaurants failed within their first three years, and the average Canadian foodservice business had a profit margin of only 4.2 per cent.” While the Restaurant Group managed to withstand its first years and expand the business significantly, it faced tough competition and had to control its costs.

Gusto 54 could tackle this challenge by measuring its progress and achievements against the financial objectives and investing in technology and employee training. This approach would allow for identifying weak spots and responding to issues in a timely manner, as well as improving the operational processes and team’s expertise and skills. Furthermore, the company should maintain its principle of hiring top talent since it can help overcome competition and ensure customer satisfaction.
