The three prominent third-party roles in negotiation are arbitrator, conciliator, and mediator. An arbitrator is a person who may dictate an agreement. Sometimes he is equated with a judge since the parties can accept a deal to give him the final decision on the issue. The coordinator maintains communication between the parties. The mediator examines the arguments and beliefs of the parties and suggests alternatives.
