Various psychological motivations may drive the prejudice. The most common is fear, driven by attitudes of not understanding other’s differences and threatened by the possibility of change due to multiculturalism. Projection, which is a natural defense mechanism related to fear, but transfers one’s own shortcomings unto others. Emotional incompetence does not integrate rational thoughts and feelings, and judgment at a healthy level, creating negative emotion and actions.
