Identify the metaphors and the similes in Earle Birney’s poem “From the Hazel Bough.” Is his use of the metaphors different from his use of the similes?

Celtic ideas and images are used in the poem to present the poem as a love poem. Similes and metaphors are used in the poem to bring out the theme of the poem. In the second stanza, the poem uses the metaphor “eyes were trees.” The analogy is used to compare the lady’s eyes to the trees. A simile is applicable in the fourth stanza, where the poet describes the lady “as plump as a finch who lived as a salmon, gay as island proud as Ibrahim.”

The use of terms in the sentence may illustrate how the woman looks; however, they refer to the woman’s wisdom. Hazel trees reflect a tree of knowledge that is similar to the woman’s comparison. Hence the use of simile and metaphor is identical as they do not contrast.
