How would you handle a situation where one member of a couple told you a secret and asked you to keep if from their spouse?

Maintaining confidentiality is essential in the field of psychology as it builds trust among one’s clients. If an individual who is half of a couple confided in me, I would ensure that the secret stays a secret until they decide that I should share it with the other party. However, therapists reserve the right to raise issues discovered in personal sessions if the issues can help the couple.

The purpose of a couple participating in a therapy session is to heal, and this cannot be achieved if one individual is withholding something that could help both of them. It would also be unethical for a therapist to agree to keep a secret from one of them.
