The great opportunity of moving to the Midwest suggested by Greene in his article is still not rather attractive for the urban citizen. The point about the opportunity in question is that the rural areas in the American Midwest are currently experiencing the so-called underpopulation, i. e. outflow of citizens that choose to move to the more highly developed urban areas. If I am concerned in respect of using the opportunity to move to the attractive Midwest rural lands, I would not take this chance and would not move from the urban area to the rural one, even despite the favourable living and taxation conditions offered. The reason for this is the wider range of developmental perspectives, especially in the areas of education and further employment, that urban citizenship brings in comparison to living in rural areas and having to access the closest educational establishments in hundreds of miles. Thus, the favourable educational and employment opportunities in the urban areas of the USA cannot be substituted by the attractive living conditions in the rural Midwest for me.
One of the ways to stop the drift away from the rural areas of the American Midwest is suggested in the article The Great Plains drain by Wells, retrieved from The Economist. The author, referring to the opinions of the number of other scholars, sees the construction of the highway that would cross Colorado. This highway would be a huge road to connect Canada and Mexico, and this road will be the source of jobs for the number of people that might return to the area or choose not to leave it. This way to stop the development of the rural underpopulation seems to be the most effective one even under the condition of the discussed highway being far from construction. The very beginning of the construction will mean the increase of the public interest in the area. Construction works will create new jobs in the region, and the further operation of the highway will amount to the creation and development of a greater number of businesses and jobs for the current and potential citizens of the American rural Midwest.
