The defence of democracy and promoting democratic values need constant vigilance. There is a continued open-minded process to renew political participation in the citizenry. Overlapping and multiple sources of reinforcement are required, but no reinforcement can be used as a substitute for openness, tolerance and fair play. Recent democratic elections have been fought closely, and voter involvement has been attracted and deep, consequential choices in respective societies. The United States is a big and complex country with crosscutting and overlapping dynamics used to shape the perceptions and concerns of people. The outcome of the 2004 presidential election in the United States has less cultural divide in the life of Americans than how the language of the cultural divide masks class dynamics in the politics of Americans. Culture has displaced or swallowed class in political debate across the ideological spectrum.
Displacement has occurred over the past several decades and is seen in multiculturalism discourses, politics of identity and diversity.
