The history of African Americans reveals that when most Africans were brought to America as slaves, they were not Christians. However, they gradually converted to Christianity, finding consolation in biblical messages of equality and spiritual deliverance. Although before being transported to the “New World”, slaves were expected to undergo conversion to Christianity, the process was not as effective as it was perceived. According to Thornton, the clergy failed to completely suppress some of the African practices such as nocturnal dancing and funeral festivities which are associated with the present-time Christian-Afro cults.
