Oriental metaphysics excludes meaningful relationships in a number of ways, according to Watts. He says that the soul and the body comprise the making of man. Man does not have two souls. The psychic man does not receive the things of the spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. It is true that many people identify the soul with the spirit. When the spirit and soul are identified, God must be extraverted, must be understood as one outside and beyond lest He likewise is identified with the individual soul.
