How does the media reflect the function of a work of art? For example, if you are selecting a photograph, was the work of art used to record a particular event or bring attention to a subject for artistic purposes? Why do you think the artist selected this particular medium for the work of art that he or she created? For example, did the artist want to create multiple copies of a work of art, as we might see in print or photography, or was the material readily available, such as found objects?

Mixed media works of art are becoming the format selected by the artists more frequently because of the wide range of expression opportunities. Moreover, with the spread of social networks, a piece can gain popularity by relating to a certain event or trend.

Media is also a valuable source to display the function of a work of art as the most interesting or provocative ones bring the audience’s attention when shared by the journalists or influencers. For instance, the Watts Towers, the mixed arts installation in California created by Simon Rodia, is a famous sightseeing place with a history and message worth sharing.

The project took 34 years to be completed, survived World War II, and became the symbol of positive renewal and peace in communities that live in the area. Today, the artwork reminds the inhabitants of hope and the power of unity in overcoming troubles. The media’s attention to it helps the town stay recognizable and reach for the government’s support if some issues occur.

Simon Rodia is an Italian immigrant who survived poverty and various challenges, and the artist’s willingness to thrive and build a better life is reflected through the Watts Towers’ creation. His pursuit of doing artistic work led him to buy a triangle metal construction in Los Angeles, the community of Watts, which later turned into a lifelong project that reflected everything that happened around him.

Rodia decorated the giant piece with a mosaic made from paper, glass, and ceramics and used the rails’ parts to expand the Towers. The selection of this particular medium for the work is not random: many of Watts inhabitants worked at railroads. Hispanic and African-American populations representatives lived in the area, and the diversity of materials used for crafting the installation addresses the blending of multiple cultures, reaching up and united in the hope for a better future.
