When tectonic plates grind along with one another, they build up potential energy along the fault, which is occasionally released in vibrations, causing earthquakes. The majority of earthquakes on the planet occur at the edge of the plates, although inter-plate earthquakes can occur when pressure accumulates in the plate. For example, San Andreas Fault in North America runs from the Baja peninsula up along the American plate’s edge.
