The lipid bilayer is comprised of two rows of phospholipid molecules facing opposing directions with their hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails in between the layer. Therefore, it is selective since no hydrophilic molecule can passively transfer through themembrane, whereas hydrophobic molecules can permeate the layer.
