In the article, Jamal Trulove, who was wrongly accused of murder and subsequently jailed in 2008, talks about the injustice in the criminal system in the US. He uses himself and the recently released Alfred Chestnut, Ransom Watkins, and Andrew Stewart as examples of the ways the legal system has failed US citizens over the years. Trulove points out that these wrongful convictions mean that not only the lives of the innocent are ruined, but millions of taxpayers’ money are wasted.

Furthermore, the article highlights that without outside help, recently released individuals are likely to find it difficult to adapt to life outside the prison bubble. Apart from the many changes the world has likely incurred in their absence, there are also employment and education gaps that will limit their functionality in society. Therefore, Trulove calls for further action from the government and legal authorities that would facilitate the re-entry of society for the wrongly convicted, such as by providing financial, legal, and mental health aid.
