On the surface, interest groups are barely distinguishable from social movements in their form. However, when comparing the goals of either, one will notice a dissimilarity. Specifically, social movements typically seek to change public attitudes, whereas interest groups strive to alter economic policies and legal standards. As a rule, interest groups form to advance the agenda and interests of their members.

Furthermore, the intention behind most interest groups can be summarized as creating social pressure needed to introduce change. Economic interest groups are highly varied; among the most common ones, those supporting the interests of the labor force, entrepreneurs, experts, and the agriculture industry, should be named.

While the labor force groups and entrepreneurship ones seek to support companies and employees respectively, expert interest groups focus on the advancement of expert knowledge and information sharing. Finally, agricultural interest groups strive to improve the state of the agriculture industry and the performance of its key players.
