As racial segregation persisted in all institutions within the U.S., military duties were significantly affected. Whites were accorded high ranks in the military while African Americans took the lower positions. At the onset of WWII, most African Americans were sent to the battlefield, where many died, and those who returned were not accorded any special treatment.
Notably, segregation within the force determined the team to be sent to battle. The war seemed to take the form of African Americans fighting each other on behalf of the superpower nations. Following the racial discrimination prevalent at the time, many people involved in the war were subjected to physical and psychological torture.
