How can the explanatory model of substance abuse held by clients and their family impact treatment and prevention practice?

In many cases, substance abuse can be justified by clients and their families. In the process, they try to explain through logical means that substance abuse is understandable and can be explained through prior biological, physiological conditions, and it is a disease. Some even consider it an extension of social behavior and is a norm and not an exception. “Expectations not only shape drunken behavior, but they also enable subsequent rationalization, justification and excuses.” When dealing with different cultural backgrounds, people tend to have an explanation influenced by their past as to what and why a particular medical condition exists, and without understanding that background, it will be difficult getting the patient and their families to consent to the prescribed medical approach to the substance abuse.

“People, especially those from different cultural backgrounds, often have very different ways of understanding illness, its consequences.” Sometimes the cultural explanation of substance abuse may be credited to bad spirits and omens with a cultural suggestion on how to deal with the problem. Understanding their explanation would allow a physician to incorporate the medical solution with cultural support systems that would get the support of the family in treating the affected patient as opposed to a confrontation on the mechanism.
