Historian Eric Foner wrote that even non-slaveholders played many roles in supporting systems of white supremacy and slavery. Describe one incident or conflict in the book where Douglass found his life negatively impacted by non-slave owners. Using this evidence explain how non-slaveholding whites were complicit in the perpetuation of slavery.

Slavery was an all-encompassing institution, perpetuating the views and behavioral patterns towards the enslaved people beyond the slave-owning households.

In Douglas’s book, it is most prominently seen in the example of white workers’ behavior toward Black employees in Baltimore’s trade industry. White workers used violent tactics on Douglas, making him switch the workplace, fearing that the growing number of Black employees would take away their jobs.

Instead of helping Douglas and other Black enslaved people escape and gain independence through work, these white workers bullied him and the newly freed Black people. They denied Black people opportunities to support themselves and not return to their enslavers just to survive.
