High schoolers typically report getting an average of 6 ¼ hours of sleep a night. On average, they report not being able to fall asleep until after 11 pm and have a 7:30 school start time. According to our class discussion, how many hours (roughly) is the recommended amount of sleep according to federal guidelines for adolescents? Explain the bio-psycho-social influences on the number of sleep adolescents receive. Explain one remedy for helping manage adolescent sleep issues.

The recommended amount of sleep according to federal guidelines for adolescents is roughly from 8 to 9 hours. However, nowadays, adolescents have difficulty getting enough sleep. According to Berk, the lack of sleep causes declines in both cognitive and emotional self-regulation. Hence, teenagers perform poorly in school and may suffer from anxiety, irritation, and depression. In addition, social media addiction can be related to the brain’s influence on the total hours of sleep adolescents receive.

Examples of social influence are part-time jobs, social media, and evening social activities. Moreover, the psychological impact on the amount of sleep relates to teenagers’ inner worries, which may be associated with family problems, school issues, insecurities, changes in self-esteem, etc. Obesity due to hormonal imbalances also leads to sleep problems. The biological/brain/hormonal effects include the lack of melatonin, a hormone affecting sleep. Cheikh et al. suggest a single dose of MEL-10 mg after evening exercise improves sleep quality and increases the number of sleep hours in healthy teenagers.

Obviously, the bright screen of gadgets leads to the excitement of the nervous system. Thus, gadgets will disrupt sleep, and the teenager will start sleeping at a different time. Bruce et al. recommend excluding devices within the bedroom to reduce the adolescents’ temptation to use social media or play games at night. Additionally, evening walks, hot showers, reading, and getting ready for bed will replace the use of gadgets and distract the teenager. Essential to add that the main thing is to free time from devices before going to bed and keep the teenager busy with routine. To summarize, it is vital to educate adolescents about the importance of sleep.
