Helping a Student Find a Conflict in Thoughts and Actions

How would you help your student client explore alternative meanings of messages and discrepancies in thoughts and actions?

Imagine the following scenario: A student talks about wanting to do better with school but continues to go out to the bars week after week without stopping, despite your repeated attempts to help him. Identify the conflict by observing the mixed messages, discrepancies, or internal or external conflict. Point out the discrepancies in your own view and words in a tentative fashion. Evaluate the effectiveness or response.
