When working rotating shifts on a regular basis, an individual’s sleep and wakefulness patterns are continuously disrupted. This problem leads to the body’s unaligned cognitive, neurological, and physiological processes that might result in health impairments. Since the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the brain serves as a body clock that aligns with the exposure to light, night shift working confuses the brain and breaks the system.
To deal with potential problems, one of the solutions is the use of bright light during wakefulness and eliminating light during sleep while maintaining the necessary amount of sleeping time on a regular basis. It is also important to address sleep debt if it occurs by allocating more time for sleeping when it is possible.
