Marine mammal stranding can be classified into two categories, namely internal and external causes. Internal causes include disease outbreaks and entanglements, whereas external causes include oil spillage, injuries due to vessel collisions, and exposure to other marine water pollutants. External reasons may arise from human activities on the water, for instance, traveling and mining. Though difficult to identify the direct cause for stranding, research links most strandings with disease outbreaks and human interference with the marine surrounding.
