It can be suggested that Red uses his position for self-gain, even though he does it to help his friends. He is “a man who knows how to get things,” and doing that allows him to get something in exchange. Andy also uses his position for self-gain, although many times, he does so for the common good. One example is taking the warden’s papers and eventually stealing his money to leave the country.
