Lack of resources, underdeveloped industry, environmental disasters, and wars can become the cause of famine, especially in low-income countries. Singer claims in his paper that affluent nations are morally obliged to provide financial aid to people in the states affected by famine by giving an example of the 1971 Bangladesh genocide.

The number of donations should be ample to relieve famine and to stay for the person doing charity at “the level of marginal utility”. It means that an individual will have enough money to survive, but giving more may harm one. Therefore, the article suggests donating to such causes as much as possible and only retaining sufficient resources not to starve.

The author supports this point by arguing that people do not need to spend their wealth on new clothing or more food for themselves; instead, they should offer assistance to those who have less. Overall, this paper suggests equal capital distribution worldwide, even if most of these funds are made in a few affluent countries.
